Valery Gergiev

Biography

One of the most prominent musical figures of our time, Valery Gergiev is an internationally renowned conductor who has greatly contributed to the rediscovery of Russian repertoire, thanks to an extensive discography and an intensely active concert life.

He is the Principal Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra and has been the Artistic and General Director of the Mariinsky Theatre for over twenty years. Under his leadership, the second and third halls of the Mariinsky Theatre opened, and the Stars of the White Nights Festival was created, positioning Saint Petersburg as a world-class cultural centre. He still collaborates with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Metropolitan Opera, among others.

In addition to his many activities, Valery Gergiev was appointed Chair of the organizational committee of the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2011. His goal is clear: to assemble the world's greatest jury members in order to help launch the careers of the most talented young musicians of our time.
