Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D major is one of the best-loved violin concerti in the history of music. Its main theme, both epic and romantic, is obviously responsible for this popularity. Nevertheless, it is the only violin concerto ever written by Tchaikovsky. It was premiered in Vienna in 1881, with the violinist Adolf Brodsky and the conductor Hans Richter.
The violinists competing at the XV International Tchaikovsky Competition must perform, during the final round of the Competition, Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D major.
